NFIB to Key-Vote Legislation Easing Regulatory Burden on Small Businesses

SB 290 calls for legislative approval for any new state rule projected to impose an economic impact of $1 million or more within a year

NFIB State Director Gregg Thompson said today the state’s leading small business advocacy organization will key-vote action on Senate Bill 290, the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny Act, a measure that would ensure greater transparency and accountability in state rulemaking by requiring legislative approval for rules impacting small businesses.

“By key-voting SB 290, we’re informing Senate and House members that North Carolina’s small business owners overwhelmingly support this critical legislation and that we’ll report every vote on this bill to our members, their constituents,” Thompson said.

SB 290 calls for legislative approval for any new state rule projected to impose an economic impact of $1 million or more within a year. Under this measure, such rules would only become effective after the General Assembly ratifies a bill explicitly approving them. Thompson said, “This added oversight gives lawmakers, small businesses, and other employers a clearer picture of significant regulatory costs, both direct and indirect, before they are enacted.”

“Main Street deserves greater certainty and a fair process in rulemaking,” Thompson said. “By key-voting SB 290, we’re telling lawmakers that regulatory transparency is essential to ensuring a strong economy.”
