Frivolous lawsuits drive up the cost of insurance, which raises the cost of doing business in Louisiana

The 2025 session of the Louisiana Legislature won’t begin until April 14, but NFIB State Director Leah Long says the organization is already laying the groundwork for several important issues.

“Louisiana’s small businesses are dealing with a host of economic challenges right now, but frivolous lawsuits are making a bad situation even worse. You have a right to seek compensation if you’ve been wronged, but some lawsuits are filed simply because someone sees a chance to make a quick buck.

“Lawsuit abuse drives up insurance and other operating costs, worsening inflation’s impact on Louisiana businesses and families. Unless these reforms pass the House and Senate and are signed into law, Main Street businesses will continue to defend themselves against predatory lawsuits that could put them out of business.”

Save the date

NFIB’s annual Small Business Day at the Capitol will be April 15. Details are pending, but Long said Small Business Day gives NFIB members and their guests the opportunity to engage directly with elected officials and speak out about the issues affecting them.
